Notch

Sur un plateau où trône un pupitre, Notch apparaît avec un bas noir sur la tête, comme pour un braquage. Oriane Varak donne à voir un corps en métamorphose constante dans l’exercice du discours politique : corps-fauve, corps-fonction accroché à sa tribune, intime et androgyne. Notch est un être de colère et de vie, habité par le mensonge autant que par la ferveur, piégé dans un espace de contradictions traversé par les bruits électroniques générés en direct par Guillaume Le Boisselier.

A body that agitates from behind a black pulpit, its head shrouded in darkness. The essential tool of persuasion and control, the social/facial mask is gone.
Only the body is left as it tries to seduce and control (itself).
It splits into male/female versions of itself both violent and touching as it gives itself to the act of public speech in a theatre of lies, a kind of circus number filled with disquieting sarcasm.

Political speeches

« In the production Notch Oriane dissects the body language of politicians: the calculated posture, the well-studied movement, the trained facial expression. But also the tics, the unconscious gestures, the moments in which the speaker seems to loose control: ‘I watched dozens of political speeches and found out that only a few speakers where able to control their body. ’. A video created in 1981 illustrates the purpose of Notch: ‘That year, the French minister of Law Badinter kept a speech against the death penalty. If you fast forward the video, one might see the torso moving constantly from left to right, as a panter would do, right before he jumps.’ Varak enlarges this movement to a hypnotic dance phrase. »

Masks

« If you would see several speeches, you would notice that the standard gets higher and higher throughout the course of time. In the thirties, the full torso of the speaker was still visible. But year after year the standard kept going higher. Today it stands right under the chin: figuratively speaking one could say that the standard decapitates the speaker. These are interesting elements to play with.’ Notch does not have a concrete character, but an androgyn, sexless creature hidden behind a mask. ‘The mask is a screen, as such no-one can attach to my female identity. It is an empty frame on which everyone can project its own homme politique. »

In deze solo, vertrekt Oriane van ideëen rond controle via sociale maskers en politieke manipulatie. In haar harde en tegelijk ontroerende vertolking van een lichaam dat in twee verdeeld is, zowel mannelijk als vrouwelijk, levert ze zich over aan het publiek in een theater van leugens, een soort circusnummer dat doordrongen is van een onrustwekkend sarcasme.

Politieke speeches

« In de productie Notch ontleedt Oriane de lichaamstaal van politici: de berekende houding, de ingestudeerde gebaren, de geoefende mimiek. Maar ook de tics, de onbewuste gebaren, de momenten waarop de spreker de controle lijkt te verliezen: ‘Ik bekeek tientallen video’s van politieke speeches en ontdekte dat slechts weinig sprekers erin slagen hun lijf in toom te houden’. Een filmpje uit 1981 illustreert de opzet van Notch: ‘Dat jaar hield de Franse minister van Justitie Robert Badinter een redevoering tegen de doodstraf. Wie de video versneld afspeelt, ziet dat Badinter zijn bovenlichaam onophoudelijk van links naar rechts wiegt, als een panter klaar voor de sprong.’ Varak vergroot die beweging uit tot een hypnotiserende dansfrase. »

Maskers

« Wie een aantal speeches bekijkt, merkt dat de pupiter in de loop der jaren behoorlijk de hoogte in gaat. In de jaren ’30 zie je nog het volledige torso van de spreker, maar in de jaren erna wordt het spreekgestoelte steeds hoger opgeschroefd, tot het vandaag tot bijna onder de kin komt: de pupiter onthoofdt als het ware de spreker. Dat zijn prik­ kelende elementen om mee te spelen.’ In Notch is er geen concreet personage, maar een androgyne, geslachtsloze figuur, verborgen achter een masker. ‘Het masker is een scherm, waardoor niemand zich kan vasthaken aan mijn vrouwelijke identiteit.
